Independent Escalator and Moving Walk Inspections

Escalators and moving walks carry the public in the busiest parts of a building, and they fail in ways passengers notice. Elevator Compliance Group provides independent escalator inspections and inspection oversight for owners and operators of airports, transit facilities, shopping centers, hospitals, campuses and mixed-use properties.

We are not affiliated with any escalator maintenance or repair contractor, so our findings and our advice are about safety and code compliance only.

  • Annual and periodic escalator inspections
  • Third-party and owner-representative inspections
  • Acceptance inspections and witnessing of new units and alterations

What our inspectors look at

Escalator inspections under ASME A17.1 and A17.2 focus on the devices that protect riders: step and skirt clearances, comb plate impact devices, handrail speed and entry guards, skirt obstruction devices, missing-step detection, brakes and stopping distance, emergency stop buttons, and the condition of the truss, steps and chains.

Findings are written so a property team can prioritize them and so a contractor’s proposal to correct them can be checked against what the code actually requires.

Escalator Inspections: common questions

How often are escalators inspected?

Most jurisdictions require an annual inspection of escalators and moving walks, with periodic tests of brakes and safety devices. Several jurisdictions require more frequent checks for equipment in transit and airport settings. We confirm the requirement for your location.

What are the most common escalator violations?

Step-to-skirt clearance, worn or missing comb plate teeth, handrail speed out of tolerance, inoperative skirt obstruction or comb impact devices, and brake stopping distance out of range. Most are maintenance issues that an independent inspection catches before the authority does.

Do you inspect moving walks?

Yes. Moving walks are covered by the same code sections and the same inspection program as escalators, and we inspect both.
